AdBlue Fill

What is AdBlue?

AdBlue is a colourless, odourless, and non-toxic liquid solution that modern diesel engines use to minimize their emissions of nitrogen oxides (NOx). These emissions are known to adversely affect human health and the environment. The solution comprises 32.5% high-purity urea and 67.5% deionised water. It is injected into the exhaust system to convert NOx into harmless nitrogen gas and water vapour.

In the third of our series on everything emission control.......we look closer at what an AdBlue system is, it's possible issues and a solution we can offer here at TayTec Tuning.

Why AdBlue Solution

Several years ago, diesel vehicle manufacturers began installing AdBlue systems to lower NOx (Nitrogen Oxide) emissions. In broad terms, the system comprises a small tank containing AdBlue fluid injected into the exhaust in a process known as Selective Catalytic Reduction or SCR. The by-products are harmlessly ejected through the normal exhaust system.

How does AdBlue work?

AdBlue utilises Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR), a process in which the solution is injected into the exhaust system, reacting with nitrogen oxides (NOx) to transform them into harmless nitrogen gas and water vapour. This process occurs in a catalytic converter containing a special catalyst that facilitates the reaction.

Side Effects and Issues with AdBlue System

Another good step towards lowering emissions? Well, yes, in principal, however there are of course side effects of this.

The fluid requires topping up as with an empty tank, many vehicles will not start - have you ever seen the dreaded no engine start warning?

AdBlue Solution

As with any ancillary automotive system, the SCR system requires maintenance and is prone to issues......imagine a fault which caused the no start situation above.

Repairs to the system are notoriously expensive, a pump replacement alone can run up to £1000.

On the commercial vehicle side, the situation is exacerbated due to much larger tanks and the significant loss of earnings from a stranded vehicle due to an AdBlue fault.

How do I maintain my AdBlue plastic tank?

AdBlue plastic tanks require minimum maintenance. However, it is crucial to look after them well and prevent contamination. The tanks must be periodically inspected for symptoms of harm or any leaks, and any maintenance needs to be made immediately to avoid AdBlue contamination.

Can AdBlue plastic tanks be used in exposed situations?

AdBlue tanks are appropriate for outdoor use but must be outside of direct daylight hours and intense weather conditions. Additionally, they need to be clear of anything that can cause excess wear or deterioration.

What is the lifespan of an AdBlue tank?

AdBlue plastic tanks are durable and might last for decades; however, their lifespan relies on factors including locations and what they are exposed to. Proper preservation and inspection can lengthen their lifespan.

How can TayTec Tuning help?

Solutions for AdBlue Systems

We use the latest generation diagnostic equipment supporting all makes so we can identify the issue, or where a nuisance ECU fault code is present, we can delete them. Where permitted* we can remove the SCR electronically from the ECU so that it is no longer in use, there is no more filling up, and there is no additional risk of faults and expensive repairs.

Contact us for more info or to discuss a solution in more depth for your vehicle, or better yet, combine an AdBlue Solution with an ECU Remap for either Performance or Economy.
